This is a miniature of the famous Mammen-Axe. The Mammen-Axe is a Silver-inlaid Viking battle axe, found in the rich burial mound of a Viking chieftain from the late tenth century. This mound was excavated in 1868 on the peninsula of Jutland in the kingdom of Denmark. This is the heartland of the Danes, one of the three maintribes of the Vikings, that primarily raided the Atlantic coast of Europe, from Germany to Spain, subjugating England, and founding the dukedom of Normandy in France. This burial site has given name to the Mammen-style, one of the main styles of Viking art, that was dominant in the lands of the Norse around the turn of the first millennium. |
